Complete a post that explores the concept of GENRE in film.

Genre is a style of category which depicts what type of film it is. It is a major component of media forms, and helps to communicate to the audience what kind of film they are about to watch. The purpose of a genre for the audience is there as some people favour certain genres to others. There is different types of genre such as Horror, romance, thriller, sci-fi and comedy. Genre is important to both film producers and film audiences because the producers need to engage their target audiences in order to for the film to be successful, whilst the film audiences need to be engaged and interested in the genre so they go and watch the film. Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to facilitate the categorization films. Genre is dependant on various factors such as a storyline.

 Generic conventions are how the producer communicates the genre to the audience, for example, the technical code of lighting is used in some way in all film genres. It is a convention of the horror genre that side and back lighting is used to create mystery and suspense – an integral part of any horror movie. An example of this type of genre is the film The Conjuring 2, and as we see from the beginning of the trailer its a dark setting and theres a build up of suspense .

In a fantasy genred film you would expect to see maybe unicorns, demons, hero's/villians, strange settings, basically things that are fictional and unreal in our world.

There are different types of sub-genres such as: biopics, 'chick' flicks, detective/mystery films, disaster films, fantasy films, film noir, 'guy' films, melodramas (or 'weepers'), road films, romances, superhero films, sports films, supernatural films, and thriller/suspense films. Sub-genres can include courtroom and trial-focused drama known as the legal drama. Types of fiction which may seem unrelated can also be combined to form hybrid subgenres, such as the melding of horror and comedy in the Evil Dead films. Other popular combinations are the romantic comedy and the action comedy film.

 Hybrid films are films that have a mix of 2 or more genres. This device is used to attract a wider range of audiences. Film industries create hybrid films because people are finding less interest in films that have just one genre, so now there are combinations of a mixture of genres.  The film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has a mixture of genres which are action, fantasy and a thriller. I find this Movie a thriller because it is a suspense saying "the untold story". This makes us think that there is something that we don't know about and makes us want to know that there is something to find out. The trailer contains a lot of action by showing several stunts that spider man does such as jumping buildings and climbing up towers. I also discovered that this is a fantasy because you wouldn't see an ordinary person jumping off buildings dressed in a spider man suit
